EQuill’s server architecture had a low-level trigger: if our database, file server, or web server cluster didn’t respond, all traffic was routed to another (otherwise unused) computer whose sole job was to send a “we’re temporarily unavailable” page to our users. It was always embarrassing to see that page. Luckily, there are always pleasant reminders that we weren’t the only ones who needed it.
