Glass in a Cab
“We premiered Einstein On The Beach; we performed at the Metropolitan Opera House. … We had sold out every night, but what we didn’t realize is that operas lose money… We were — both of us — totally busted. Within two weeks of that date I was in the cab again. And you know in New York cabs, you have your picture and your name. And someone tapped on the glass and said young man, you have the name of a very famous composer. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that that was who was driving her cab.”
